Jambands.com and other outlets are reporting on the death of Cody Burnside, from unconfirmed causes. The grandson of North Mississippi Hill Country blues legend R.L. Burnside, and brother of acclaimed drummer Cedric Burnside, Cody was the epitome of what Chris Thomas King called the "21st century hip-hop blues." A skilled rapper, Burnside appeared on the North Mississippi Allstars 2003 album Polaris as well as on John-Alex Mason's 2011 album Juke Joint Thunderclap. New releases this week include: Craig Chaquico's Fire Red Moon (Blind Pig Records); Gov't Mule's The Georgia Bootleg Box (Evil Teen Records); Ian Siegal & the Mississippi Mudbloods' Candy Store Kid (Nugene Records); Mike Wheeler's Self Made Man (Delmark Records); Omar & the Howlers' Too Much is not enough(Big Guitar Music); and Willie Buck's Cell Phone Man (Delmark Records). The Southwest Musical Arts Foundation will be releasing a benefit CD on October 23rd, titledT he Kid Ramos/Bob Corritore Phoenix Blues Sessions. Taken from a handful of recording sessions that Ramos did back in the 1990s with Corritore, the album includes vocalists like Nappy Brown, Henry Gray, and Big Pete Pearson. Although a lot of the performances had been previously-released on various CDs, this limited-edition release gathers them together on one disc, and 100% of the CD sales will go to Ramos as he battles cancer. Copies will be available through The Blues Foundation's Hart Fund. The new Blues Images calendar is here! It is also accompanied by a free CD that features songs by each month's artist and extra bonus songs, including vintage tracks dating to the roots of the blues. The 2013 calendar features material from artists like Blind Willie Johnson ("Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground"); Blind Blake ("Diddie Wa Diddie"); Charley Patton ("Frankie and Albert"); Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy ("What's The Matter With The Mill?"); and Blind Lemon Jefferson.
